Dr. Smythe is a cold, hollow man and the dean of Emory University. He is balding and mostly grey, and even for an academic he has unusually dark circles under his eyes and a very anemic pallor. He speaks in curt, crisp tones and always to the point. Rumors around the faculty imply that he once had a fiance, but few who know him now would ever accuse him of something as human as falling in love.
The party learned he was in love with Erica Swanson: a vision in white. She was a very prominant fashion model in New York, which is where Dr. Smythe hails from. He never knew what she saw in him, only that she made him feel things he’d never felt before. Many men, thousands really, had chased after her, but she agreeed to take his ring and to be his wife. That’s when things seemed to go horribly wrong. She disappeared. After that, no pictures of her were printed and no modeling agency seemed to have even heard of her. In fact, the only picture he still has of her is one that was taken of the two of them just outside of the subway— the only picture he could ever remember being taken of her without her make-up on, and the only picture where she looked truely happy.
